Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Wednesday that Canada will formally recognize Palestine as an independent state during the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September.

Carney said he has spoken with the president of the Palestinian Authority, who has committed to a series of political reforms, including holding general elections next year. The prime minister also emphasized that Hamas, which Canada classifies as a terrorist organization, will not be involved in this process.

“Preserving a two-state solution means standing with all people who choose peace over violence or terrorism, and honouring their innate desire for the peaceful co-existence of Israeli and Palestinian states as the only roadmap for a secure and prosperous future,” Carney stated.

The announcement has been welcomed by many in the Muslim community, though some urge more immediate support for Palestinians.

“We truly appreciate the Canadian government’s decision to recognize Palestine,” said Imam Fayaz Tilly of the Muslim Community of Calgary. “But we must not forget—this is about survival and self-determination. Palestinians have the right to exist and to protect themselves.”

Tilly also called for urgent humanitarian support for Gaza.

“These are people suffering from genocide, starvation, and death,” he said. “Their right to exist should not come with conditions. Political negotiations can come later.”

The federal government has not yet detailed any new humanitarian measures in tandem with the recognition announcement.
