Calgary’s living wage has increased to $26.50 per hour for 2025, up $2 from last year, reflecting the rising cost of essentials such as transportation, child care, and food, according to Vibrant Communities Calgary (VCC).

A living wage is the hourly rate a worker needs to cover basic expenses and maintain a modest standard of living, accounting for taxes and government transfers.

“This year’s living wage shows both the progress and the pressure Calgarians are experiencing,” said Dani DeBoice, Executive Director of VCC during an interview with RED FM. “Housing costs have begun to stabilize, showing that effective government policies make a difference, while other living costs continue to climb.”

The update comes amid efforts by organizations and businesses to support fair pay. Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids said adopting a living wage aligns with its values, helping staff provide better service while ensuring they can meet their own needs.

Small businesses have also participated in pilot programs to support living wages. Clean Club Calgary, a cleaning services company, became a certified living wage employer, citing improved employee morale and retention.

Across Alberta, 21 municipalities have published living wages for 2025, coordinated by the Alberta Living Wage Network. Calgary’s living wage is now 77 per cent higher than the provincial minimum wage.

On average, the increase means the lowest-paid Calgarians could earn an extra $400 per week, helping them cover essentials and contribute to the local economy.

Rising costs for transportation, child care, and food underscore the ongoing challenges, even as housing costs stabilize, highlighting the importance of government policies and community support.
