Calgary’s rapid growth demands stronger representation

Lawyer Brian Thiessen and former city councillor Jeff Davison have written an op-ed calling attention to Calgary’s representation at the provincial level.

The Alberta Electoral Boundaries Commission has released its interim report, proposing two new seats for Calgary. However, Thiessen and Davison argue that the city needs at least one additional seat to fairly reflect its rapid population growth. They also stress that urban ridings should remain urban, rural ridings should remain rural, and that the final electoral map must uphold the democratic principle of “one person, one vote.”

Both Thiessen and Davison were candidates for mayor in the October civic election.
