Canada has joined international partners in condemning Iran for killing and arresting citizens who are protesting the government and rising living costs, as questions grow about the stability of the Iranian regime.

In a joint statement released Friday with Australia and the European Union, Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand praised the courage of peaceful protesters and denounced Iran’s use of lethal force against demonstrators.

The statement said at least 40 people have been killed by Iran’s security forces, although activists believe the true death toll could be more than ten times higher.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also weighed in, posting Friday that the reports are “profoundly concerning” and calling on Iranian authorities to respect freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.

Conservative MPs and pro-Israel groups have been actively sharing information about the protests online, with some suggesting the Islamic Republic, which has ruled Iran since 1979, may be nearing a breaking point.

Canada severed diplomatic relations with Iran in 2012. In 2024, Ottawa further escalated pressure by designating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of Iran’s military, as a terrorist organization.
