A new analysis from the Trottier Energy Institute at Polytechnique Montréal says Canada is not on track to meet its 2030 or 2035 greenhouse gas reduction targets.

The report projects that by 2030, Canada’s emissions will fall only 20 to 25 per cent below 2005 levels, far short of the federal goal of a 40 to 45 per cent reduction.

While emissions from the electricity sector have dropped by 60 per cent compared to 2005, those gains are being undermined by rising oil and gas production, the study finds.

The analysis also points to recent federal policy changes — including the cancellation of the consumer carbon price and the pause on the electric-vehicle sales mandate — as factors slowing progress toward national climate goals.

Calling for a “policy reset,” the report urges the government to accelerate the shift to renewable energy sources like wind, solar, and hydro, promote faster electric vehicle adoption, and invest in a large-scale carbon capture and sequestration industry to stay on track for net-zero emissions by 2050.
