Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada should focus on “things we can control” after U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ended trade negotiations.
Premiers, union leaders, and business groups have since weighed in. Unifor president Lana Payne said Canada “can’t negotiate from your knees.”
Trump’s announcement followed the airing of an Ontario TV ad in the U.S. that featured anti-tariff messaging and quoted former Republican president Ronald Reagan.
Carney made his remarks Friday morning on the tarmac, minutes before departing for Asia to pursue trade discussions in Malaysia, Singapore, and South Korea.
“For months we have stressed the importance of distinguishing things we can control and things we cannot control — we can’t control the trade policy of the United States,” Carney told reporters.
He added that U.S. trade policy has fundamentally changed from previous decades, noting that tariffs now apply to all trading partners.
Despite the setback, Carney said “a lot of progress has been made” in Canada-U.S. negotiations and that Canada is ready to continue discussions “when the Americans are ready.”
The Prime Minister’s Office emphasized that the Asian trip is intended to strengthen trade ties and build a more resilient economy less reliant on a single trading partner.
Carney’s recent efforts have focused on addressing U.S. tariffs affecting key Canadian sectors, including steel, aluminum, lumber, and automotive products.
