Over the weekend, Prime Minister Mark Carney made an unannounced visit to Ukraine, where he suggested that Canada might consider deploying troops as part of an international coalition to help uphold a potential ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia—should both sides agree to one.

This raises significant questions about Canada’s military readiness for such an operation.

Host Cormac Mac Sweeney spoke with Christian Leuprecht, a professor at the Royal Military College and editor of the Canadian Military Journal, to explore the implications of this possibility.

Leuprecht weighed in on whether the Canadian Armed Forces are currently prepared for such a deployment, particularly given existing resource constraints and ongoing international commitments.

He also discussed the strategic and political risks involved in deploying Canadian troops to Ukraine, especially in a fragile post-conflict environment.

Leuprecht noted that such a mission could resemble Cold War-style peacekeeping operations, where the military acted as a stabilizing force between opposing blocs.

However, today’s context is far more complex, given Russia’s aggressive posture and the evolving nature of warfare.

He emphasized that if Canada were to take part in such a mission, it would require careful planning, strong international coordination, and clear objectives to ensure both effectiveness and safety for deployed personnel.
