Canada Post says it will present new contract proposals to the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) in an attempt to restart stalled negotiations.

The Crown corporation announced Thursday that the new offers are intended to bring both sides back to the bargaining table as early as next week, and that work is already underway to make that happen.

This move comes after CUPW, which represents around 55,000 postal workers, rejected what Canada Post called its “final offer” in early August. The union countered with its own proposal on August 20 — one Canada Post claims added “significant new costs and restrictions” during a financially difficult period for the company.

In its statement, Canada Post said it had asked CUPW to return to the table with more “workable solutions” that reflect the corporation’s current challenges. Since that hasn’t happened, the company says it is now putting forward new “global offers” in hopes of reaching common ground, particularly on issues such as weekend delivery.

Canada Post also called on the union to lift its recently imposed ban on delivering unaddressed flyers, known as Neighbourhood Mail. The union introduced the flyer ban on Monday, citing stalled talks and saying the action was meant to pressure the corporation back into negotiations — a goal that now appears to be materializing.

Contract discussions have dragged on for nearly two years, with key sticking points including wages, part-time employment, and ongoing financial losses at the postal service.
