Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne confirmed on Tuesday that Canada has no plans to pay the $1-billion US fee for a permanent seat on U.S. President Donald Trump’s “Board of Peace,” which is set to oversee governance and reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
“There [are] a lot of details to be worked out, but one thing which is clear is that Canada is not going to pay if we were to join the Board of Peace,” Champagne told reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The comments come after Prime Minister Mark Carney — one of the 60 world leaders invited to join the board — accepted the invitation, while emphasizing on Sunday that Canadian officials had not yet reviewed “all the details of the structure, how it’s going to work, what the financing is for, etcetera.”
Champagne said it is still early in the process and much remains undecided. “We’re still in the early days of determining the terms of reference of that board, how it will operate,” he said.
He added that the final decision will rest with the prime minister once all facts are known and the structure and financing are fully clarified, ensuring that any participation aligns with Canada’s best interests.
