Canada did not join a mass walkout at the United Nations General Assembly on Friday as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered his address.
Canadian Ambassador Bob Rae’s office confirmed he remained seated while dozens of delegations, many from developing nations, left the chamber in protest.
The session’s presiding official was forced to call for order several times as the walkout unfolded.
In his speech, Netanyahu condemned recent moves by countries such as Canada to formally recognize a Palestinian state, calling the decision “disgraceful” and warning it would encourage terrorism against Jewish people.
He also spoke extensively about hostages taken by Hamas nearly two years ago, threats posed by Iran, and appeared to be heckled at least once during his remarks.
The address came as Israel faces mounting global criticism over its bombardment of Gaza, the starvation of Palestinian civilians, and cross-border attacks, including a recent strike on Hamas negotiators in Qatar.
