The Canadian government has summoned Russia’s ambassador to Canada, Oleg Stepanov, in response to recent violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones.
CityNews has confirmed that Global Affairs Canada formally reprimanded Ambassador Stepanov on Wednesday following reports that multiple Russian drones crossed into Poland between Tuesday and Wednesday.
While some of the drones were intercepted and shot down by NATO forces, Canada has not confirmed whether it participated in the interceptions.
Russia and its ally Belarus have claimed the drone incursions may have been accidental, possibly caused by electronic jamming. However, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte dismissed that explanation, calling the act reckless regardless of the motive.
Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand said she spoke with Rutte Thursday morning and affirmed Canada’s willingness to support new efforts aimed at strengthening defences on NATO’s eastern front.
Stephen Saideman, a political science professor at Carleton University, noted that Canada has already increased its NATO presence in the region, and both the alliance and Poland are likely assessing where Canada could further contribute.
