According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), the annual pace of housing starts in August dropped 16% compared to July. The seasonally adjusted annual rate fell to 245,791 units, down from 293,537 the previous month.

The decline was largely driven by a slowdown in urban centers with populations of 10,000 or more, where the annual rate decreased to 223,728 units in August, compared to 272,330 in July. Meanwhile, rural housing starts were estimated at an annual rate of 22,063 units.

Despite the monthly decline, the six-month moving average of the seasonally adjusted annual rate rose 1.6% in August, reaching 267,259 units.

CMHC also reported that actual housing starts in urban centers totaled 18,408 units in August, up from 16,775 during the same month in 2024.
