New data from Statistics Canada reveals that the trend of Canadians steering clear of travel to the United States remains strong in 2025, with travel patterns showing a notable shift amid ongoing trade tensions.
According to the agency, the number of Canadian residents returning from the U.S. dropped by 31.9% in May compared to the same month in 2024. It marks the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year declines in U.S. travel.
While travel to the U.S. is down, Canadian visits to other international destinations are seeing modest gains, with overseas return trips up 8.9% in May compared to last year.
Overall, Canadians are travelling less in 2025. The total number of trips abroad in May fell by 22.5% year-over-year—the fifth straight monthly drop. Month-over-month data also shows a 3% decline from April to May.
The trend is mirrored on the other side of the border, as fewer Americans are visiting Canada. U.S. resident trips north fell 5.6% in May compared to May 2024, marking the fourth straight monthly decline.
The data suggests that shifting geopolitical and economic factors, including the ongoing Canada-U.S. trade dispute, continue to influence travel habits on both sides of the border.
