Prime Minister Mark Carney says there’s a chance Canada could reach a new sectoral tariff deal with the United States by the end of this month — but he’s urging caution against premature optimism.
Speaking to reporters on his way into a cabinet meeting Tuesday morning, Carney told CTV News’ Judy Trinh that discussions with Washington remain ongoing.
“We’ll see,” Carney said. “We’re in ongoing discussions with the Americans… I wouldn’t overplay it.”
Government sources say there’s growing hope for progress this week, particularly on steel and aluminum, as both countries look for ways to ease tensions amid a prolonged trade standoff.
Carney’s government has been in months of negotiations with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration, seeking relief from broad tariffs that have strained key industries on both sides of the border.
While a fully tariff-free agreement remains unlikely, Ottawa is pushing for sector-specific arrangements covering steel, aluminum, copper, autos, and lumber.
Carney said he plans to meet with President Trump during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in South Korea late next week.
“I’m looking forward to seeing the president at APEC… but one of our core goals is diversifying trade,” Carney said. “That’s why we’re going to Asia.”
Before APEC, the prime minister will travel to Malaysia for meetings with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), as part of Canada’s broader push to expand trade ties in the Indo-Pacific region.
Meanwhile, Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc struck a more cautious tone, saying he remains less optimistic about the prospects of finalizing a deal before APEC.
