Prime Minister Mark Carney’s keynote address at the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos has triggered widespread international attention, underscoring growing uncertainty in global politics as geopolitical tensions intensify.
In his speech, Carney argued that the post-war “rules-based international order” is effectively over and unlikely to return. He called on so-called middle powers to work together to build a more resilient and cooperative global system capable of withstanding rising instability.
While Carney did not mention U.S. President Donald Trump by name, his remarks were widely interpreted as a pointed response to the current U.S. administration’s increasingly assertive foreign policy.
Trump responded the following day during his own address at the forum, directly criticizing the Canadian prime minister while highlighting the United States’ proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system.
“We’re building a Golden Dome that’s going to, just by its very nature, be defending Canada,” Trump said. He went on to accuse Canada of benefiting disproportionately from the United States, suggesting it should show greater appreciation.
“Canada gets a lot of freebies from us,” Trump added. “They should be grateful. I watched your prime minister yesterday — he wasn’t so grateful. Canada lives because of the United States. Remember that, Mark, the next time you make your statements.”
