Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has an opportunity to play a constructive role on the world stage, following his visit to the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week.

“In every moment where there’s a crack, where there’s a rupture, there is possibility — and it’s our responsibility, it’s our opportunity as Canada in this moment to find it,” Carney told reporters Tuesday evening. “After my visit to the United Nations General Assembly, I can assure Canadians that there is light, there are many possibilities.”

Carney’s remarks came after U.S. President Donald Trump delivered a roughly hour-long address at the 80th session of the General Assembly, once again expressing skepticism toward multilateral institutions.

“What is the purpose of the United Nations?” Trump asked, criticizing the body for what he called “empty words” and saying it was failing to live up to its potential.

The president also aired grievances over technical difficulties with an escalator and TelePrompTer before his speech, quipping: “These are the two things I got from the United Nations: a bad escalator and a bad TelePrompTer.”

Despite his sharp tone, Trump later reassured diplomats that he supports the UN’s mission, telling Secretary-General António Guterres that while he sometimes disagrees with the institution, he believes its potential to advance peace remains significant.

Earlier this year, Trump withdrew the United States from the UN Human Rights Council, froze funding, and ordered a review of American involvement in the organization.
