Calgary, Alberta_ Prime Minister Mark Carney has announced that a byelection will take place on August 18 in the Alberta riding of Battle River—Crowfoot.

The vote comes after Conservative MP Damien Kurek stepped down on June 17, creating an opening that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is expected to contest in hopes of re-entering the House of Commons.

Poilievre lost his previous seat in the Carleton riding near Ottawa during April’s federal election, when he was defeated by Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy.

Carney had promised in May to move quickly in calling a byelection if Poilievre and his party decided to pursue one.

“I’ve already made it clear to Mr. Poilievre that if he and the Conservative Party want to initiate a byelection, I’ll make sure it happens without delay—no stalling, no politics,” Carney said at the time.
