Prime Minister Mark Carney will announce a cabinet shuffle on Monday, following last week’s resignation of Steven Guilbeault.
Guilbeault stepped down Thursday from his roles as Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Quebec Lieutenant, just hours after Ottawa unveiled its new energy agreement with Alberta.
In his resignation letter, Guilbeault acknowledged Carney’s efforts in the face of “profound disruption,” but said environmental priorities remain his core focus.
“That is why I strongly oppose the memorandum of understanding between the federal government and the government of Alberta,” he wrote, calling his decision “one made with great sadness.”
Government sources told CTV News the upcoming shuffle will be modest, aimed specifically at assigning duties from Guilbeault’s former portfolios. The Prime Minister’s Office confirmed a swearing-in ceremony will take place at Rideau Hall at 3 p.m. ET today.
