Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Germany late Monday to strengthen Canada’s trade and defence ties with Europe’s largest economy. Amid global uncertainty driven by Donald Trump’s trade policies and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, Carney is aiming to deepen Canada’s alignment with European allies.

Bernd Althusmann, a former German politician and head of the Canadian office at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, emphasized the importance of the Canada-Germany partnership in these unpredictable times.

He noted their shared democratic values and mutual reliance in areas like energy, security, and technology.

Germany is particularly interested in Canadian energy exports, especially hydrogen, following its energy crisis after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. However, delays in Canada’s hydrogen production have slowed progress.

On security, Germany views the Arctic as a potential flashpoint and is keen to collaborate with Canada through research and defence projects, including a proposed submarine initiative with Norway.

Trade ties are also central to the agenda. Germany has ratified the 2017 Canada-EU trade deal and is urging other EU nations to do the same, believing Canada can help offset protectionist U.S. policies. German officials see potential for expanded cooperation in green tech, critical minerals, and cybersecurity.

Despite recent missteps—like Canada’s low-profile presence at Hannover Messe and the lack of an ambassador in Berlin since late 2023—Althusmann remains optimistic.

He called Carney’s visit timely, as both countries navigate a shifting global landscape and seek to influence U.S. policy through continued G7 collaboration.
