The Canada Border Services Agency is intensifying its efforts to identify and remove individuals involved in extortion and organized criminal activity across the country. Working closely with law enforcement partners, including the BC Extortion Task Force, the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) in Edmonton and Calgary, and local police in Ontario, the CBSA targets individuals who may violate the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA).

Since August 2025, the CBSA has been monitoring immigration cases potentially linked to extortion in the Pacific and Prairie regions, later expanding to the Greater Toronto Area in November 2025. Through collaboration, public tips, and its own investigations, the agency has opened 372 immigration investigations as of March 12, 2026. Seventy removal orders have been issued, with 35 individuals already deported.

Two recent cases highlight the agency’s work: Arshdeep Singh, a study permit holder arrested for ties to criminal organizations involving extortion, arson, drugs, and firearms, was removed under escort on January 19, 2026. Sukhnaaz Singh Sandhu, a temporary resident detained for organized criminality, was deported on February 3, 2026.

The CBSA emphasizes that investigations are ongoing and that it will continue taking enforcement action against those engaged in extortion and related criminal activities to protect public safety in Canada.
