Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, a close ally of former President Donald Trump and founder of Turning Point USA, was shot and killed on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University.
The fatal shooting has sparked renewed national concern over the rise of political violence in the United States.
Trump announced Kirk’s death on his Truth Social platform, calling the 31-year-old “Great, and even Legendary,” and praising him as someone who deeply connected with American youth.
At the time of the shooting, Kirk was participating in a campus debate hosted by his organization under a white tent labeled with slogans like “The American Comeback” and “Prove Me Wrong.” Social media videos verified by The Associated Press show Kirk responding to questions about gun violence when a single gunshot rang out.
Kirk reached toward his neck as blood began to pour from a wound on his left side. Chaos followed as audience members screamed and fled.
The suspect remains at large. According to Orem Mayor David Young, law enforcement took one person into custody, but officials later confirmed that the individual was not the shooter. Officers have been canvassing the area, showing residents a photo of a person of interest.
Following the attack, Utah Valley University was evacuated, with all classes canceled until further notice. Authorities instructed anyone still on campus to shelter in place until it was safe to evacuate.
Kirk’s visit had already stirred controversy on campus. An online petition asking the university to cancel his appearance had gained nearly 1,000 signatures. In response, the university had affirmed its commitment to free speech and intellectual debate.
