China has escalated its trade dispute with Canada, filing a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over Ottawa’s new tariffs on steel products.
Earlier today, Beijing submitted its case in response to Canadian restrictions on imports made with steel melted or poured in China. The complaint follows Prime Minister Mark Carney’s announcement last month of a 25 per cent surtax on such products. Carney argued the measure was necessary to shield Canada’s domestic steel sector from market distortions created by steep U.S. tariffs.
China, however, condemned the Canadian move, calling the duties “discriminatory.” In a statement translated from the Chinese commerce ministry, Beijing said it was “disappointed” by Canada’s actions and urged Ottawa to “correct its erroneous measures.”
The steel dispute comes as trade tensions between the two countries intensify. Earlier this week, China slapped a nearly 76 per cent tariff on Canadian canola seed, widely seen as retaliation for Canada’s own 100 per cent duties on Chinese-made electric vehicles.
The WTO will now assess China’s complaint, though disputes of this kind often take months or even years to resolve. In the meantime, both Canadian exporters and importers face mounting uncertainty as the trade rift deepens.
