Transport and Internal Trade Minister Chrystia Freeland is expected to step down from cabinet for a new appointment connected to Ukraine, CTV News has confirmed.

According to two sources, Freeland will take on a role similar to that of a special envoy, with a formal announcement anticipated later today.

The development comes just days after Freeland travelled to Ukraine alongside Canadian Ambassador Natalka Cmoc, former prime minister Jean Chrétien, and former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Andrew Furey.

Freeland, who is of Ukrainian descent, previously lived in both Ukraine and Russia during her two decades as a journalist. When approached by reporters on Parliament Hill Tuesday morning, she declined to take questions. The Globe and Mail first reported the news.

This marks the second time in less than a year that Freeland has resigned from cabinet. Nine months ago, she quit in a sharply worded letter criticizing then-prime minister Justin Trudeau’s fall economic statement. At the time, she had been Trudeau’s most senior minister, serving in his cabinet for five years.

Trudeau resigned weeks later, paving the way for the Liberal leadership race. Freeland entered the contest but lost in a landslide to now-Prime Minister Mark Carney, a longtime friend.
