Veteran Liberal MP and former cabinet minister Chrystia Freeland will resign from Parliament on Friday, bringing an end to a political career that has made her one of the most influential figures in Canadian politics over the past decade.
“It has been an immense honour to serve my constituents and all Canadians in Parliament since 2013,” Freeland said in a social media post on Wednesday. “Going forward, I will continue to support and help build Canada in every way I can, while championing the brave fight of the people of Ukraine, a cause I have been committed to my entire life.”
Her decision follows an announcement earlier this week by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who named Freeland as an adviser on economic development for Ukraine. Later the same day, Freeland said she was stepping down immediately from her role as Prime Minister Mark Carney’s special representative for Ukraine’s reconstruction.
Freeland has been widely recognized as one of Canada’s strongest and most outspoken supporters of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion. During her time in government, she played a leading role in international efforts to hold Moscow accountable, including pushing for the seizure of Russian assets to help fund Ukraine’s rebuilding efforts.
Her resignation marks the close of a significant chapter in federal politics, even as she signals her intention to remain active on the international stage, particularly in support of Ukraine’s recovery and future development.
