A proposed high-density redevelopment in southwest Calgary’s Marda Loop has taken a major step forward, despite significant opposition from local residents.
City council voted 13-1 in favour of a rezoning application from Truman Homes and Calgary Co-op, paving the way for the construction of two high-rise and two mid-rise towers in the neighbourhood.
The approval comes in the face of strong public resistance—city officials received 136 letters opposing the development and only three in support.
The planned Marc and Mada Block project would span two acres between 33 and 34 Avenues and 20 and 21 Streets S.W., and include 441 residential units across three of the four proposed towers. Under the new zoning, the high-rises could reach up to 19 storeys, with the mid-rises climbing to 11 storeys.
The Marda Loop Community Association says residents are primarily concerned about the proposed scale of the buildings, potential parking and traffic issues, limited green and public spaces, and the project’s environmental sustainability.
