Canada’s effort to remove foreign nationals linked to B.C.’s widening extortion epidemic has been halted after every suspect facing a deportation hearing filed a refugee claim.

The individuals were identified by the province’s Extortion Task Force, but once the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) began immigration investigations, all 14 suspects sought refugee protection.

As a result, their deportation cases are paused until the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB) determines whether their asylum claims are legitimate.

“The 14 individuals made a refugee claim after the CBSA initiated immigration investigations against them for alleged inadmissibility,” the agency told Global News.

A CBSA spokesperson added that officials must now wait for the IRB’s Refugee Protection Division to rule on the merit of each claim before any further action can be taken.
