Elections Canada says attempts to spread misinformation and disinformation during this spring’s federal election did not affect the outcome of the vote.
“Neither the agency nor the Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections Task Force detected any evidence of foreign interference, criminal activity, cyber security incident or coordinated disinformation campaign impacting the administration of the event,” the agency said Monday in its post-election report.
Chief Electoral Officer Stéphane Perrault noted that, unlike in the 2021 federal election, there were no incidents of foreign actors trying to disrupt the administration of this year’s vote.
The agency credited proactive efforts to identify false and misleading claims and respond through official communication channels for helping maintain electoral integrity.
Part of that strategy included ramping up its social media presence. Elections Canada said it posted 1,531 messages across platforms such as X, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn during the campaign—up from 1,059 during the previous federal election.
