The Alberta government issued an emergency alert Wednesday warning of critical water supply conditions in Calgary and surrounding communities following a major feeder main break on Dec. 30, 2025.

The alert was sent out online around noon and echoed warnings already issued by the City of Calgary.

“This is an Alberta emergency alert. The City of Calgary has issued a water supply alert,” the notification stated. “Supply levels remain in a critical state, affecting the city’s ability to provide water to communities and ensure adequate water is available for firefighting.”

The warning applies to all residents who rely on Calgary’s water system, including those living in Calgary, Airdrie, Strathmore, Chestermere, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation.

Provincial officials and municipal leaders are urging residents to conserve water as much as possible, stressing the need to reduce both outdoor and indoor use to protect essential services.

City data shows that 507 million litres of water were consumed on Wednesday, exceeding the target limit of 485 million litres — the threshold between sustainable and unsustainable water use. While consumption was lower than Tuesday’s total of 511 million litres, officials say further reductions are urgently needed to stabilize the system.
