Calgary fire crews and EMS launched a major response Tuesday evening following reports of multiple people in distress on the Bow River in the city’s northwest.
Calls began coming in around 5 p.m. from concerned citizens who spotted several people floating down the river in the Bowness and Montgomery areas. According to the Calgary Fire Department (CFD), some of those individuals had entered the water unexpectedly.
The rescue operation centred near the 85 Street NW Bridge, where fire crews positioned themselves on both the north and south banks of the river. A CFD rescue boat was deployed from the West Baker Park Boat Ramp to assist with locating and retrieving those in the water.
Officials say it’s currently unclear how many people went into the river or what caused the incident. However, early reports suggest both adults and children may be involved.
As of early Tuesday evening, there is no official word on injuries or whether all individuals have been accounted for.
The Bow River is known for its strong currents and cold temperatures, particularly in early summer months when water levels may still be high from spring runoff. First responders are urging the public to exercise caution around all bodies of water and to wear personal flotation devices when rafting or boating.
The CFD says updates will be provided as more details become available.
Calgarians are reminded to call 911 immediately if they witness someone in distress near or in the river.
