As workforce adjustment notices continue to be issued across the federal public service, the government’s central purchasing agency says positions tied directly to procurement and contracting are expected to be largely spared, as the focus remains on improving efficiency.
The federal government has started informing thousands of employees about upcoming job reductions, part of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s plan to reduce the size of the public service by 16,000 full-time equivalent positions over three years. The cuts stem from a federal spending review conducted in 2025.
Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC) has already issued hundreds of workforce adjustment notices. According to a Jan. 16 update from the Public Service Alliance of Canada, 730 notices were delivered. Additional data compiled by The Hill Times shows that the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada reported 110 notices among its members, while the Canadian Association of Professional Employees reported 139.
Together, these figures bring the total number of affected PSPC positions to 979 as of Jan. 22. Despite the growing number of notices, it remains unclear which specific roles will ultimately be eliminated.
