Canada’s Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is in Calgary on Monday to address the Chamber of Commerce about Budget 2025. His remarks begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Hyatt on Centre Street S, followed by a fireside chat with Chamber president and CEO Deborah Yedlin.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s first budget, tabled Nov. 4, projects a $78.3-billion deficit for the current fiscal year—almost double last year’s Liberal forecast. The spending plan has already survived two confidence votes, despite political upheaval triggered by one Conservative MP crossing the floor to the Liberals and another Alberta Conservative MP announcing his resignation.
Alberta reactions have ranged from sharp criticism to guarded support. Calgary’s new mayor, Jeromy Farkas, said last week he was cautiously optimistic about the budget, pointing to the federal commitment to fund local infrastructure.
