The number of Albertans relying on food banks has risen dramatically this year, according to Food Banks Canada’s 2025 Hunger Report released Monday.
The report shows Albertans made an average of 210,541 food bank visits per month in 2025 — a 21.8% increase from 2024, marking the second-largest jump in the country. Only Canada’s territories saw a bigger spike, with usage up 22.9%.
Children accounted for a significant share of Alberta’s food bank users, with 75,968 visits — more than one-third — made by those under 18.
Across Canada, food banks recorded 2.166 million visits in March 2025, up 5% from March 2024 and nearly double the number seen in 2019. More than half of all visits (51.4%) were made by women aged 18 and older.
The report attributes the sharp rise in demand to the soaring cost of living, particularly rent and housing, which leaves many Canadians struggling to afford food.
It warns that poverty and hunger are becoming normalized in Canada and calls for stronger measures to address food insecurity nationwide.
