The race for Calgary’s mayoralty is heating up, with former city councillor Jeromy Farkas officially entering the contest on Tuesday.

Farkas, who finished second in the 2021 mayoral election, became the fifth registered candidate listed on Elections Calgary’s website. Speaking to reporters after filing his paperwork, he said his campaign will focus on public safety and affordability.

“What we’ve been hearing, first and foremost, has been around safety. It’s around affordability,” he said. “We have about two months to go. It’s going to be an exciting campaign.”

Farkas represented Ward 11 from 2017 to 2021, served on the Calgary Police Commission, and has been CEO of the Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation since 2023. A day earlier, he named John Larson, principal at Zero Hour Strategy, and Sarah Elder, owner of Madame Premier, as co-chairs of his campaign.

He was joined at the Elections Calgary office by Brian Thiessen of the Calgary Party, who also filed his nomination papers Tuesday. Thiessen previously served on the Calgary Police Commission.

Several other high-profile names are also in the mix. Coun. Sonya Sharp, leading the Communities First Party, registered her campaign in March. Current Mayor Jyoti Gondek and former councillor Jeff Davison have both declared their intentions to run but have yet to file their paperwork.

Candidates have until Sept. 22 to formally submit their nominations.
