Governor General Mary Simon has confirmed she will join Prime Minister Mark Carney at a vigil Friday night to honour the victims of a mass shooting in Tumbler Ridge, B.C.

Nine people were killed in Tuesday’s shooting at a home and at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, in the northeastern British Columbia community of approximately 2,700 residents.

Carney has invited all federal party leaders to attend the vigil. The offices of Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet, NDP interim Leader Don Davies and Green Party Leader Elizabeth May have confirmed they will be present at the event, according to The Canadian Press.

Among those killed were five students from Tumbler Ridge Secondary School: Kylie Smith, Zoey Benoit, Ticaria Lampert and Abel Mwansa Jr., all 12 years old, and 13-year-old Ezekiel Schofield.

The vigil is expected to bring together community members, political leaders and Canadians across the country in a show of solidarity and remembrance for the victims and their families.
