Several Liberal MPs are emphasizing party unity following Culture Minister Steven Guilbeault’s resignation from cabinet over the federal government’s new pipeline agreement with Alberta.
In a statement posted to social media Thursday, Guilbeault announced that he had tendered his resignation to Prime Minister Mark Carney “with great sadness,” outlining his objections to what he described as the prime minister’s reversal of key environmental policies established by the previous Liberal administration.
“Even in this difficult economic climate, I am among those who firmly believe environmental priorities must remain central,” he wrote. “That is why I cannot support the memorandum of understanding between the federal government and the government of Alberta.”
Guilbeault confirmed that he will continue to sit as a Liberal MP, though he will no longer serve as Carney’s Quebec lieutenant. The timeline for an anticipated cabinet shuffle remains uncertain.
Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon praised Guilbeault’s “remarkable record of public service,” but said he respectfully disagrees with his view of the Alberta agreement.
“I believe the deal opens doors to significant environmental progress in Western Canada—particularly in Alberta,” MacKinnon said, pointing to measures such as carbon capture initiatives and expanded renewable energy distribution across the Prairies through new interconnections.
