The business formerly operating the now-defunct department store known as Hudson’s Bay has officially changed its name.
The company and its subsidiaries will now operate under various names starting with Rupert Legacy.
This new name pays homage to Prince Rupert, the Bay’s first governor, and Rupert’s Land- the vast territory granted to Hudson’s Bay in 1670 when it began as a fur trading enterprise.
The name change was required as part of an agreement in which Hudson’s Bay sold its name and trademarks to Canadian Tire Corporation Ltd.
The $30-million deal included iconic elements such as the Bay’s signature stripes, its coat of arms, the Distinctly Home housewares brand, the Hudson North apparel line, and well-known slogans like “Bay Days” and Zellers’ “the lowest price is the law.”
Although the department store chain has liquidated and closed all locations, it remains under creditor protection while preparing to sell its leases and auction off its art and collectibles.
