As Alberta and Ottawa move forward on a framework paving the way for a potential pipeline to the B.C. coast, Indigenous nations in Alberta are expressing mixed reactions — even as one organization has been designated a central partner in the plan.
The Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation (AIOC) was identified as a key collaborator in the memorandum of understanding announced last week. AIOC CEO Channa Martineau described the agreement as an early but meaningful step.
“This is an opportunity to start with the way you mean to go on,” Martineau said.
The memorandum states that federal approval of a pipeline would hinge on the project demonstrating a national benefit and creating “opportunities for Indigenous co-ownership and shared economic benefits.”
So far, the AIOC has facilitated roughly $745 million in loan guarantees supporting projects connected to 43 First Nations.
