A baby under the age of one has died from influenza in Alberta, according to the latest update on the province’s respiratory virus dashboard released Thursday.

Health officials confirmed the infant is the first person under the age of 20 to die from the flu in the province during the current influenza season. Details about the child’s gender and where the death occurred have not been released.

The death comes as Alberta continues to experience one of its most severe flu seasons in recent years.

Provincial data shows that since mid-August, 258 people in Alberta have died from influenza. During the same period, more than 3,800 Albertans infected with the flu have been hospitalized, with nearly 300 of those patients requiring treatment in intensive care units.

Overall, more than 16,000 cases of influenza have been reported across the province this season.

Health officials say vaccination rates remain relatively low, with provincial data indicating that only about one in five Albertans has received a flu shot.

Public health authorities continue to encourage residents to get vaccinated and to take precautions such as staying home when sick, washing hands frequently and limiting contact with vulnerable individuals.
