Interac users are facing widespread debit payment disruptions, according to reports from both the company and outage-tracking site Downdetector.ca.
As of 6 p.m. EDT, more than 1,500 users had reported problems on Downdetector, with 78% indicating issues specifically related to making purchases. The disruptions reportedly began shortly before 4 p.m. EDT.
Interac acknowledged the issue in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “We understand some customers are unable to pay with debit at select merchants.” However, the company added that “Interac services are operating normally,” leaving the root cause of the outages unclear.
In Toronto, the impact was visible — at least one grocery store posted a sign notifying customers that only cash payments were being accepted.
In addition to Interac, Downdetector also showed increased outage reports on Friday for several major financial services, including Visa, Mastercard, CIBC, Tangerine, TD, RBC, and Scotiabank. It remains uncertain whether these reports are connected to the Interac issues.
