In a dramatic political turnaround, Jeromy Farkas is — unofficially — Calgary’s next mayor.

Monday night’s civic election delivered one of the tightest races in recent memory, with Farkas edging out his nearest rival, Sonya Sharp, by just 585 votes, according to preliminary numbers from Elections Calgary.

Farkas captured 91,065 votes, while Sharp trailed closely with 90,480. Incumbent mayor Jyoti Gondek finished a distant third with 71,397 ballots cast in her favour.

Official results are expected by noon on October 24, but if the margin holds, it marks a stunning comeback for Farkas — four years after losing decisively to Gondek in 2021, when he earned 30 per cent of the vote compared to her 45.

Sharp, who previously served as a city councillor, chose not to seek re-election to council this year, instead taking aim at the mayor’s chair. Other contenders in the crowded field included Jeff Davison and Brian Thiessen.

Earlier in the day, Farkas said the tone of this campaign felt markedly different from his last, emphasizing housing, public safety, affordability, and jobs as his top priorities.

If confirmed, Farkas’ narrow victory signals a shift in voter sentiment and a new chapter for Calgary’s leadership.
