A new ThinkHQ Public Affairs survey reveals that most Albertans favour ending the province’s public funding for accredited independent and private schools.
According to the poll, 59 per cent of respondents said “yes” to the proposed referendum question, “Should the Government of Alberta end its current practise of allocating funds to accredited private schools?” Only 26 per cent voted “no,” while 15 per cent remained undecided. When undecided voters are removed, support rises to 69 per cent.
Pollsters say the findings highlight growing tensions and challenges surrounding Alberta’s expanding “direct democracy” initiatives, such as citizen-initiated referendums on Alberta independence and recall legislation targeting elected officials.
The petition driving this proposed referendum is being led by Alberta Funds Public Schools, which has until Feb. 11 to gather the required number of signatures.
ThinkHQ president Marc Henry says the results should raise concerns for Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides, as public sentiment appears to be shifting strongly toward reassessing how education dollars are allocated in the province.
