Calgary police have arrested a man accused of setting two fires weeks apart that damaged three restaurants in the city’s Beltline neighbourhood.
The first fire occurred on Nov. 4 at about 1:40 a.m., when flames were intentionally set in a back alley behind Bridgette Bar near 8 Street and 10 Avenue S.W. Police say the blaze caused an estimated $200,000 to $300,000 in damage, affecting a washroom and a private dining room. The restaurant was unoccupied at the time.
A second incident happened more than a month later, on Dec. 17, shortly before 5 a.m. Fire investigators believe flames started at a back alley entrance, damaging Salt and Brick and spreading to the neighbouring Greta Bar.
Police say “Charlie’s Speakeasy,” located at the back of Salt and Brick, sustained significant damage before the fire extended next door.
Investigators believe the two incidents are connected and were deliberately set, though a motive has not yet been determined.
As a result of the investigation, 34-year-old Aldin Crowchild was arrested on Saturday. He is facing four counts of arson and one count of breaching a probation order. Police say Crowchild remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 8, 2026.
