Border officers have seized more than a tonne of illegal drugs at Alberta’s busiest land crossing in a series of major busts late last year.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) says that in November and December 2025, officers at the Coutts port of entry intercepted a combined 1,010 kilograms of cocaine, methamphetamine, suspected heroin and dode (opium poppies) from three separate commercial trucks entering southern Alberta.

November 26 Seizure

On Nov. 26, border officers examined a commercial truck carrying electrolyte beverages destined for Calgary. With assistance from the CBSA’s Detector Dog Service, officers uncovered 461 kilograms of cocaine and 43 kilograms of suspected heroin concealed within the shipment. An additional one gram of opium was found hidden inside the cab of the truck.

The driver was arrested and charged with smuggling.

December 2 Seizure

On Dec. 2, officers searched a commercial truck hauling an empty trailer. During the inspection, 300 kilograms of cocaine were discovered. Officers also located 400 grams of suspected dode (opium poppies) in the cab.

The driver was arrested at the scene for smuggling.

December 18 Seizure

On Dec. 18, officers, again with assistance from the Detector Dog Service, examined a truck carrying a declared shipment of vacuum parts destined for Calgary. During the search, 206 kilograms of methamphetamine were found concealed inside the load.

The driver was arrested for smuggling.

In all three cases, the drivers and the seized narcotics were transferred to the custody of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Federal Policing Northwest Region for further investigation.

CBSA officials say the seizures highlight ongoing efforts to combat cross-border drug trafficking and protect Canadian communities from the harms associated with illegal narcotics.
