Calgary fire crews battled a fast-moving blaze in the city’s southeast Monday night that forced dozens of residents from their homes.

Firefighters were called to the 1100 block of New Brighton Park S.E. around 8:40 p.m. after flames broke out in a two-storey single-family home. The fire quickly spread to neighbouring properties, destroying three garages and leaving several homes heavily damaged by fire, smoke and water. Two additional homes sustained moderate damage.

In total, 21 people were displaced, along with two dogs that made it out safely. One resident was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and later released.

Calgary police assisted with crowd control, traffic management and evacuations as crews worked to contain the blaze. During firefighting efforts, crews also discovered a gas leak, prompting additional safety precautions and temporary road closures in the area.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
