Defence Minister David McGuinty says he has “every confidence” the Liberal government will succeed in passing its upcoming fall budget, even as concerns mount over whether the minority Parliament will deliver enough votes.

His comments come after Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon expressed worry that the budget might fail to pass and accused Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre of pushing for a Christmas election.

Speaking to reporters in South Korea on Thursday, McGuinty said he believes the government can “earn the respect and the support” of the House of Commons through negotiation and by ensuring the budget reflects Canadians’ priorities.

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to unveil his first federal budget on November 4. However, the Liberals remain several votes short of a majority, meaning they will need backing from at least one opposition party — or a few MPs to abstain — for the fiscal plan to pass.
