Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a public warning following a confirmed case of measles at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary. The individual, who was infectious at the time, visited the hospital’s emergency department on Sunday, July 13.

According to AHS, anyone who was in the ER between 10:08 a.m. and 2:14 p.m. on that day may have been exposed to the virus. The alert is specifically directed at individuals born in or after 1970 who have fewer than two documented doses of a measles-containing vaccine, as they may be at greater risk of developing the illness.

Health officials are urging those who were present during the exposure window to monitor themselves for symptoms and to check their immunization records. Measles is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily through the air, even with minimal contact.

Common symptoms include a fever of 38.3°C or higher, a cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a distinctive rash. The rash usually appears three to seven days after the fever begins, starting behind the ears and on the face before spreading to the body, arms, and legs.

Anyone who begins to show symptoms is asked to stay home and call the measles hotline at 1-844-944-3434 before seeking any in-person medical care. This includes visits to family doctors, walk-in clinics, or pharmacies.

AHS continues to investigate the case and is working to notify anyone directly impacted. Officials stress the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of measles and other serious illnesses.
