The city of Medicine Hat, Alta., long recognized for its natural gas production, has given the green light to a major urban solar project — contingent on finding a buyer for the electricity it generates.

City councilors voted unanimously on Monday to move forward with the $131.5-million Saamis Solar Park, a development aimed at attracting new investment, reducing carbon levy costs, and extending the life of existing gas-fired turbines.

Mayor Linnsie Clark emphasized the potential economic benefits, saying, “You’ve got potential for getting the ball rolling on new investment in the city, which I think we’d all agree is something that we need.”

The first phase of the project will see the construction of a 75-megawatt solar facility, with plans to expand in the future. When fully completed, the Saamis Solar Park could reach 325 megawatts, potentially supplying enough electricity to meet Medicine Hat’s entire demand and providing a stable energy source as local gas reserves decline and power revenues remain unpredictable.
