Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has ruled out the possibility of a bilateral trade agreement with Canada, saying existing arrangements under the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) are sufficient.
Speaking during her morning press conference on Wednesday, Sheinbaum said there is “no need” for a separate deal. “We have the trade deal with the United States, Canada and Mexico… There is no need,” she said.
Her remarks followed what she described as a “very good” meeting on Tuesday with senior Canadian government ministers, which included discussions about expanding direct trade between the two countries.
Sheinbaum emphasized that while trade relations with Canada were a key topic, the conversations did not imply any intention to move outside the existing CUSMA framework.
The Mexican president also confirmed that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to visit Mexico for direct talks in the near future, although a date has not yet been finalized.
“Tuesday’s meeting was a preparatory meeting for Prime Minister Carney’s visit, and it was a very good meeting,” Sheinbaum told reporters.
