Former immigration minister Marc Miller is accusing Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre of stoking “anti-immigrant sentiments” with his call to scrap Canada’s temporary foreign worker (TFW) program.

At a press conference in Brampton on Tuesday, Poilievre argued that record levels of immigration in recent years are contributing to the shortage of jobs and housing for Canadian youth.

Speaking at the Liberal caucus retreat in Edmonton, Miller pushed back, saying the TFW program should not be eliminated but reformed to address issues such as permit fraud. He noted the federal government is already working to reduce the proportion of temporary residents in Canada from about seven per cent of the population to five per cent by 2027.

Poilievre, however, insisted immigrants are not at fault, blaming the Liberal government for “admitting too many, too fast.”

Provincial leaders are also weighing in. B.C. Premier David Eby says the program should be either overhauled or shut down entirely, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford suggested that young Canadians need to show more willingness to work.
