Starting Monday, more Albertans can schedule appointments for their influenza and COVID-19 vaccines as the province moves into Phase 2 of its 2025 immunization rollout.

Phase 1 began on September 29, prioritizing seniors in care homes, pregnant individuals, those who are immunocompromised, healthcare workers, and others at high risk.

According to Alberta’s respiratory virus dashboard, just under 40,000 people received a flu shot during the first phase — roughly 0.8 per cent of the province’s population.

Now, all remaining Albertans can book their vaccinations through pharmacies or public health clinics.

This year marked the first time Alberta introduced a pre-order system for vaccines. In a shift from previous years, COVID-19 shots now cost around $100 for individuals who are not considered high-risk — such as those not in long-term care, not immunocompromised, or not working in healthcare. The vaccine remains free for these high-risk groups. All other provinces continue to offer COVID-19 vaccines for free, with the exception of Quebec.

The Alberta government says the pre-order system is meant to improve distribution and reduce vaccine waste. However, pre-ordering is not required to receive a vaccine.

In a move that received no formal announcement, Alberta also began accepting pre-orders for the 2026–2027 flu and COVID-19 vaccines on September 29, according to information posted on the province’s website. The pre-order window will remain open until December 15.
